Founded as the University Department of English with the inception of Kolhan University in August 2009, the Department later transformed into the University Department of English and Cultural Studies to incorporate the emerging dimensions of cultural discourse in English Studies. With an average annual intake of 60 students in the Postgraduate Programme in English, the Department caters to the higher academic needs of aspirants with diverse academic horizons. The classrooms are well equipped with smart boards and other ICT aids, making the teaching–learning process dynamic and effective in the Kolhan region. The PG curriculum is modeled on the CBCS pattern and is periodically updated to expose learners to evolving academic experiences. The Department offers a Ph.D. Programme in English and promotes research in areas such as Translation Studies, Diaspora Writings, Cultural Studies, Travel Writings, Film Studies, and Literatures from the Margins. A total of 13 Ph.D. scholars have been awarded the Ph.D. degree in English by the University, while six scholars are currently in the final stages of the submission process. The research environment is further enriched by the influx of NET/JRF candidates from neighboring states like Odisha and West Bengal. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department organized online webinars and lectures by inviting speakers from various universities across the country, thereby sustaining academic engagement during challenging times. The Department functions with the motto of instilling human values among aspiring learners while also creating opportunities for them to hone their creative and professional skills. Additionally, the Department has prepared the FYUGP syllabus in English in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP), which has been implemented from the session 2022.
